In their July 2019 Issue CIM Magazine describes our joint research program with Kingston Process Metallurgy on the development of fiber optic probes for copper flash furnaces. The fiber probe is inserted into a furnace at 1000 C to probe the emission from a flame generated by combustion of finely ground copper ore. Our probe was designed to be extremely robust and has now been tested by graduate students Arthur Stokreef and Adam Bernicky at industrial smelters in Hamburg, Germany and near Sofia, Bulgaria.
